ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Sokolof is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Harvard Medical School. He then went on to sub-specialty training in interventional spine care and sports medicine at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey. Upon completion of his fellowship in 2008, Dr. Sokolof decided to shift directions and focus his practice on optimizing physical function and quality of life for people living with and beyond cancer. As such, he joined the faculty at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center in New York City. At this time, he was also appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College where he was awarded Teacher of the Year during the academic period of 2016-2017. In May of 2018, Dr. Sokolof was recruited to initiate and lead a new division of clinical service at New York University-Langone Health in conjunction with NYU’s Perlmutter Cancer Center (also an NCI comprehensive cancer center) and Rusk Rehabilitation as the Service Chief and Director of Oncological Rehabilitation. Upon starting this new leadership role, he received a promotion to Clinical Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University-Grossman School of Medicine. In both of these academic positions, Dr. Sokolof was active in the education of medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. He also was prolific as a national speaker and author in peer reviewed medical journals.
Dr. Sokolof’s work within the oncology setting inspired him to seek out additional medical training programs on the role of lifestyle factors such as physical activity, diet, sleep, emotional stress, and environmental factors in the development and survival of cancer and the mission of treating the root causes of clinical problems that negatively impact physical function. Dr. Sokolof is passionate regarding the use of exercise as medicine within the setting of cancer. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine’s International Roundtable for Exercise and Cancer, a group of physicians and scientists that charged with the publication of guidelines for exercise prescription within the field of oncology. He is also an executive committee member of Moving Through Cancer, a global health initiative that focuses making exercise prescription standard of care practice within the field of oncology.
