Summary
Eyelid rejuvenation, also known as blepharoplasty, removes redundant skin and fatty tissue from the eyelids to eliminate wrinkles and bags, and revitalize the appearance of the eye area. The procedure can have a profound impact on your appearance, as the area around the eyes is among the first facial features to betray a person’s true age. Furthermore, as the focal point of the face, the eyes are the facial feature that attracts the most attention.
Rejuvenation of the area around the eyes can include several types of procedures. The surgeons at NYBRA Plastic Surgery will create an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs.
Types of procedures
- Upper blepharoplasty: This involves tightening redundant skin and possibly removing bulging fat to contour the upper eyelid and smoothen its appearance.
- Lower blepharoplasty: Like upper blepharoplasty, this involves removing skin and fatty tissue to eliminate bags, smoothen the skin, smoothen the transition from the lid to the cheek, and address age-related deformities, like the tear trough.
- Canthopexy: This allows tightening of the lids to restore a youthful, almond shape. It can also address functional problems associated with a lower lid that has become too lax.
Procedure details
- The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia. In selected patients, an upper blepharoplasty can also be offered under local anesthesia only
- Eyelid surgery frequently functions as part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation along with facelift surgery
- A preoperative assessment and treatment plan will guide us as to the approach and technique to use
- Incisions are placed within the natural creases of the eyelids, so that any resulting scarring will be inconspicuous
- Our surgeons use magnification and meticulous surgical technique to carry out the individualized procedural components to achieve the desired result
- To promote recovery and help control bruising and swelling, cold compresses and dressings are placed over the eyes once surgery is complete. Topical eye ointment for bedtime and saline drops during the day are used for several days or a few weeks to maintain proper lubrication after surgery
- Most patients experience only mild discomfort and feel ready to socialize in 2 weeks when most bruising and swelling has subsided
Risks & Benefits
Blepharoplasty surgery is generally well tolerated. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected and will subside over 1-2 weeks. Some patients may temporarily experience dry eyes the first few weeks. A downward pull on the lower lid can occur secondarily to the swelling and healing, but typically can be avoided by proper surgical technique and the addition of lid tightening if needed. Occasionally, we may choose to do a touch up procedure to achieve the best results. Most patients see significant improvement after a short down time. The skin of the eyelids heals very quickly with virtually imperceptible scars. Given the central role of the area around the eyes in social interactions, any improvement can have a profound effect in your appearance.
