‘Before the After’ Book Launch Events

Please join us to celebrate the launch of Dr. Jonathan Bank’s new book, ‘before the after’. Proceeds from sales of the book benefit our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. This year, NYBRA Plastic Surgery celebrates 20 Years as a flagship partner of Making Strides and with this milestone we continue our efforts to fight cancer.

Breast cancer is much more than a physical malady. The emotional impact is significant, and at times may feel insurmountable. This project sheds light on that component of 24 women’s journey to survivorship through unplanned snapshots taken for physical purposes but catching emotional glimmers. We aim to give hope to future women in similar situations by sharing this project with the public.

“About six years ago, when I was trying to frame a full view of the torso of one of my patients, I accidentally captured the bottom part of her face, along with a grimace that looked like an uncomfortable upside-down frown. She reluctantly posed in front of my camera a day or two before a big operation, ahead of a long road to recovery. About six months later, after completing all of her surgical procedures, she stood in front of my camera, proud, confident, just beaming with joy and relief. That was clearly seen in her upside-down smile. Since that point, whenever I lecture on breast reconstruction, I show anonymous photographs of her body, and then zoom in to the lower part of her face. To me, that sliver of pixels represents the essence of my profession.”
