Summary

PRFM for Hair Rejuvenation is an advanced treatment that uses Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) to naturally stimulate hair growth. By isolating growth factors from your own blood, PRFM promotes healthier hair follicles, thickens existing hair, and encourages new hair growth. It is a safe, minimally invasive option with little downtime, ideal for those experiencing hair thinning or early-stage hair loss. Over time, patients see improvements in hair density and texture as PRFM works to enhance follicle regeneration and extend the hair growth cycle.

Procedure details

The process involves drawing a small amount of blood, separating the platelet rich component to make platelet rich plasma (PRP) that is held within a Fibrin – Rich matrix (PRFM). The PRFM is injected directly into the scalp, targeting areas of thinning or hair loss. These injections deliver concentrated growth factors to the hair follicles, promoting repair, strengthening, and new growth. This is typically done in a series of multiple sessions for optimal results. The first 3 sessions are spaced one month apart, followed by a 4th session six months later. The procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes with minimal downtime. Patients begin to notice fuller, healthier hair growth within 3-6 months.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits

  • Natural Growth Stimulation: PRFM uses your own blood platelets, making it a natural and safe option for hair restoration.
  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure involves simple injections, with no surgery or long recovery periods.
  • Improves Hair Density: Stimulates dormant hair follicles, promoting new hair growth and thickening existing hair.
  • Slows Hair Loss: Helps slow the progression of thinning hair and prevents further hair loss over time.
  • Quick and Convenient: The procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes with little downtime, allowing you to return to normal activities the same day.
  • Versatile Treatment: Suitable for both men and women experiencing early-stage hair loss or thinning.
  • Safe with Minimal Side Effects: Because PRFM is derived from your own blood, there’s a low risk of allergic reactions or rejection.

Risks

  • Mild Discomfort: Patients may experience minor pain or discomfort at the injection sites.
  • Swelling and Redness: Temporary swelling, redness, or tenderness in the treated areas is common but usually subsides within a few days.
  • Bruising: There may be minor bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolves on its own.
  • Limited Effectiveness for Advanced Hair Loss: PRFM is most effective for early-stage hair thinning. It may not produce significant results for individuals with advanced hair loss or complete baldness.
  • Multiple Sessions Required: For best results, several treatments are necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mechanism of action of PRFM l for hair restoration? What is PRFM actually doing to grow hair?

The PRFM system allows for the prolonged release of platelet growth factors. This prolonged release stimulates stem cells, prolongs dermal papillar cell survival and increases angiogenesis. These factors combine to prolong the anagen phase of hair growth and shorten the catagen or resting phase. The result is increased hair thickness and hair follicle survival.

Do you numb the scalp? If yes how?

We use topical Liodcaine/ Tetracaine cream applied at least 30 minutes before the injection.

How do you inject the scalp?

Microdroplets of PRFM are diffusely injected into the areas of hair loss through a small needle.

How many treatments do I need?

For the most effective results, the initial three treatments are 4-6 weeks apart, followed by a fourth treatment 6 months later. It takes 3 to 6 months after the final injection to see the full results.

How long do the results last?

This varies with every patient, however maintenance treatments 1-2 times per year is recommended to prevent further hair loss and treat new areas of hair loss. You will be re-evaluated at 6-month intervals.

What are the patient limitations after the treatment?

There is no downtime following this treatment, however you will be instructed to be gentle when washing hair and sleeping on the part of the scalp that was treated for 72 hrs. after treatment. Prior to your treatment you will be given detailed Pre/Post Op list of instructions.

Can PRFM be used with any other hair loss treatment?

Yes it can! In fact, studies have shown that the use of PRFM with other hair loss treatment modalities such as medical management with Finasteride (Propecia), has a synergistic effect on slowing down hair loss. PRFM may also be used in combination with light therapy and/or topical Minoxidil application (Rogaine).
