NEW YORK BREAST RECONSTRUCTION ALLIANCE

MICROSURGERY FELLOWSHIP

The Microsurgery/Breast Fellowship at the New York Breast Reconstruction Alliance offers training in state-of-the-art microsurgical and breast reconstruction procedures. The fellowship is one year (July 1 – June 30) and has been offered since 2009.

Our practice consists of four busy plastic surgeons, and two full-time surgical physician assistants. It is located on the north shore of Long Island in close proximity to New York City. More than 350 free tissue transfer procedures are done each year. The majority of breast reconstructions utilize free flaps, including DIEP flaps, TUG/PAP flaps, and GAP flaps. Implant-based breast reconstructions include staged expander/implant cases as well as direct-to-implant/ADM procedures. While the focus of the practice is post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, the fellow will also participate in a broad range of complex microsurgical and non-microsurgical reconstruction procedures involving other areas (including head and neck, chest wall and abdominal wall), as well as aesthetic procedures.

Fellows gain experience in complex clinical decision making with responsibilities that focus on operative and postoperative patient care under the direction of the attending surgeons. They will also have the opportunity to participate in office hours and attend local plastic surgery conferences. Fellows do not have any weekend or night call duties. Participation in clinical research, leading to presentations at regional and national meetings, is encouraged. Our previous fellows went on to take positions in academic practice (Loma Linda University) and a premier breast reconstruction private practice (Texas Center for Breast Reconstruction).
